چکیده

The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) produced by a mesoscale model is investigated using standardized statistical diagnostics. Results show that upperand lowerlevel zonal winds display the correct MJO structure, phase speed (8 m s) and space–time power spectrum. However, the simulated free atmosphere moisture, outgoing longwave radiation and precipitation do not exhibit any clear MJO signal. Yet, the boundary layer moisture, moist static energy and atmospheric instability, measured using a moist static energy instability index, have clear MJO signals. A significant finding is the ability of the model to simulate a realistic MJO phase speed in the winds without reproducing the MJO wind-convection coupling or a realistic propagation in the free atmosphere water vapor. This study suggests that the convergence of boundary layer moisture and the discharge and recharge of the moist static energy and atmospheric instability may be responsible for controlling the speed of propagation of the MJO circulation.

Frictional Moisture Convergence in a Composite Life Cycle of the Madden–Julian Oscillation

A composite life cycle of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is constructed using an index based on the first two EOFs of the bandpass-filtered (20–80 days) 850-mb zonal wind averaged from 58N to 58S every 2.58 around the equator. Precipitation, 1000-mb convergence, 850-mb wind, and 200-mb wind are composited for the period 1979–95. Water vapor integrated from the surface to 300 mb is composit...

Mean State and the MJO in a High Resolution Nested Regional Climate Model

The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO, Madden and Julian, 1971, 1972) is a dominant feature of intraseasonal (20-90 day) variability in the tropics. According to the classic view, the MJO begins as a positive convective anomaly in the equatorial western Indian Ocean. It then propagates eastward toward the maritime continent where convection weakens until the MJO reaches the west Pacific where the ...

Modulation of the Madden-Julian Oscillation by ENSO: Inferences from Observations and GCM Simulations

The impact of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is studied, based on reanalysis data and output from an ensemble general circulation model (GCM) experiment. Observed monthly sea surface temperature variations over the period of 1950–99 are imposed in the deep tropical eastern/central Pacific in the course of the SST experiment. Both GCM, and reanalys...

The cloud population and onset of the Madden-Julian Oscillation over the Indian Ocean during DYNAMO-AMIE

[1] Variability of the cloud population in the central equatorial Indian Ocean was observed in the context of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) during the Dynamics of the MaddenJulian Oscillation (DYNAMO) and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Madden-Julian Investigation Experiment (AMIE) field campaigns. Radar observations from the polarimetric S-band radar on Addu Atoll in theMaldives charac...

Role of the Boundary Layer Moisture Asymmetry in Causing the Eastward Propagation of the Madden–Julian Oscillation*

The moisture budget associated with the eastward-propagating Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) was diagnosed using 1979–2001 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) data. A marked zonal asymmetry of the moisture relative to the MJO convection appears in the planetary boundary layer (PBL, below 700 hPa), creating a potentially more unstable stratification to the east of the MJO convection and favoring th...
